some amount of bang

Another combo workout today, lifting (including the dreaded Maintenance Squats) and then as much running as I could fit in. It’s kind of frustrating that I’m spending an hour and a half at the gym every day; I feel like for all that time spent I should be getting a little more bang for my buck, you know?

Well, I guess now that I think about it I’m getting plenty of bang. Today I fit in a whole-body lifting session, 20 minutes of fast running, and stretches– plus a shower (even washed my hair). Maybe I don’t know what I’m expecting.

Some days, though, I’m just sort of exasperated with myself… I get plenty of exercise, eat pretty darn well, and you know, I don’t even come close to looking like one of those "fitness people". For the most part I don’t really care if I do or not, but we’re all sort of sold a bill of goods right, do these things and you will look like this. And it’s pretty much bullshit, at least for me… But even if I don’t look like a fitness people I’m fit and strong and that’s okay.

  1. How you feel is what matters!!! Great job!

Be patient you will get there. Focus on quality rather than duration. It’s a common mistake to do ‘more’ rather than ‘better’. Take a look at my post ‘quality over quantity’ it should help.

Make sure not to tire yourself out by going to the gym everyday
For a while I went to the gym 6 days out of 7 in a week, but I saw no difference
I aim to do intense exercise 3 times a week with a day’s break, and I walk on a daily basis
As Chris has commented, focus on quality rather than quantity
Keep up the good work :)

It is a bill of goods, that’s the marketing hype part. There are a lot of gym memberships, fitness classes, exercise equipment, books, and diet plans to sell, and “you’ll feel great” isn’t as tempting as “you’ll look great!”

As long as you feel good about what you’re doing, that’s the important thing. You know, I like to follow roller derby, and those women are extremely fit and they do CrossFit. They are total badasses and competitive athletes. And none of them look like “fitness people.” They’re going for strength, endurance, speed, agility—for functionality, not a certain look. I’m not dissing fitness models, but they are models and what you have to do to look a certain way isn’t the same as being a certain way. Different things which have unfortunately been conflated in all the marketing.

If nothing else, WE all know you’re a fit BAMF.

Oh man, I have such admiration for those derby women. They’re amazing! An acquaintance of mine used to do roller derby and she has great stories too, the comaraderie on the teams is just so cool.

Thanks for the supportive comment! If I approached fitness with the goal of changing my body, I would’ve quit a long time ago…

      Exactly!
